The Mayan
Inward Turning Sage sculpture is symbolic of the Hermit who shuts out distractions to complete the spiritual pilgrimage and temporal work. The Hermit Symbolizes the law of wholeness—to become complete by uniting the highest state of attainment in the material and spiritual realms. The Hermit’s number nine, is three threes and symbolizes this unity of mind, body, and spirit. Nine is the number of completion and wholeness.
Use your work in the world as a spiritual path to achieve your higher destiny.
The Rune for the Hermit is Jera. As the marriage of heaven and earth, Jera represents the harvest that comes to us if we work in harmony with nature’s laws and with right and honorable intention.
Take your time and do your work right with correct planning, proper sowing, constant nurturing, and timely harvesting.
The Hermit achieves the pinnacle of perfection by following his or her own path with warrior-like steadfastness and courage (Nine of Wands Integrity). Through focus and discipline, the Hermit finds the light of illumination at the end of the dark cave of life’s trials and tribulations (Nine of Crystals—Narrowness). In touch with the light of the inner self, the Hermit converts personal qualities and potentials into a wheat field of harvest (Nine of Cups—Fulfillment).
Use your inner resources fully.
Materially secure, the Hermit seeks solitude in order to go inward. The Greek word root of hermit is eremites, meaning “desert and solitude.” Through solitary introspection, the Hermit journeys into the inner temple to live in union with the Divine.
Meditate.
The Hermit’s IChing Hexagram is #20, Kuan/Contemplation:
|
To apprehend the mysterious and divine laws of life,
and by means of the profoundest inner concentration
to give expression to these laws in their own person.

As the inner voyager, the Hermit is mythologically associated with the Pilgrim, Monk, Sage, Sadhu, Yogi, and Ascetic.
The Hermit’s Kabbalah letter-name is Yod, which means the “open hand.” In touch with the “higher self,” the Hermit touches others. The Hermit brings the higher powers through the hands to heal and guide. Complete and whole, the Hermit is a way-shower and guide to others—truly wise old owl.
Use your own way of healing to touch others, to reveal and heal.
If you drew this card, it might be telling you that now is the time for turning inward towards inner being-ness.
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.
Ecclesiastes 3:1

Toni:
Your Alternative Journal of Nursing is a breath of fresh air in the medical field. There is a reason why so many people spend their own money on alternative healthcare treatments – it works better! You show great care in your selection of authors and articles. I trust your sources, and there is always something more to learn. I applaud your efforts. The AJN should be read by every nurse in this country, especially those who would never read it! Congratulations on another superb issue.
